Feast without the footprint
At the heart of our work as carbon accounting specialists lies a journey of exploration. This year we’ve been crunching numbers for our clients’ carbon emissions as well as our own business. It’s been enlightening, sparking discussions about business savings and how each of us can make a difference.
The festive season is upon us. It’s all about joy, parties and family shenanigans. But here’s the twist: while we’re popping crackers and sipping wine, we’re adding a greater load to the environment. The end result is more energy, more food, more waste, more travel, and yes, less in the bank account.
It’s not all doom and gloom because small, mindful steps can lead to substantial collective strides in reducing our carbon footprint. It’s doable, it’s impactful, and it’s something each of us can contribute to.
Sustainability Journey
Speaking of impact, sustainability claims are all the rage nowadays. Many brands talk the talk, but can they walk the walk? That’s where the proof lies: in the pudding.
If your 2024 resolution is to kick some sustainability goals and lead the pack, measuring emissions and setting reduction targets is key. As for your team? They’re the secret sauce. Getting them on board now can set the stage for a greener future and a more successful transition.
This festive season, let’s embrace personal responsibility and set the tone for a sustainable journey. It’s not just about saying the words—it’s about living them. Let’s make sustainability an adventure we embark on together, one that’s not only meaningful but also a lot of fun.
12 Days of Sustainable Christmas
We pulled together a list of suggestions from our team to yours for 12 days of sustainable Christmas. We know you can’t do them all, but having a go at a couple is better than none.
1. Gift cards
Sprinkle some eco-friendly magic with digital gift cards, unforgettable experiences and some love for local market producers and artisans.
2. Wrapping
Gifts dressed to impress. Wrap them up in fabric, reusable gift bags or recycled paper. Sustainable gifting has never looked so good.
3. Lighting
Shine brighter by switching to LED tree lights: energy efficient, lower bills and longer bulb life.
4. Plants
Spruce up your space with natural elements and give your existing plants a festive makeover.
5. Catering
Dial down the excess. Avoid over-catering your Christmas shindigs because, let’s face it, leftovers have a shelf life too. Quality over quantity.
6. Leftovers
If the guests don’t devour it all, toss the leftovers into a compost bin and turn those scraps into nourishing superheroes your plants will enjoy.
7. Gifts
A potted tree is the green, grand and gloriously reusable gift this season.
8. Donation
Think outside the gift box and make a charitable splash.
9. Transport
Party-bound? Car-pool, uber-pool or get public transport to your festive function.
10. Tableware
Saving the planet is as stylish as it gets, so don’t be tempted by disposal and use reusable tableware. Let’s dine fine, not dump.
11. Treasures
Turn those unwanted treasures into charitable pleasures. Giving is the new black. Donate to a charity rather than the bin.
12. Decor
Embrace minimalist decor or opt for natural elements, potted plants that can be composted or get the kids foraging and being creative.
Beyond Christmas
Why not keep going with sustainability practices after Christmas? Make a commitment to reduce waste and adopt more sustainable practices.
